The National Pavilion of the Russian Federation received the gold award in Exhibition Design category. The silver and bronze awards were given to Great Britain and the Republic of Korea respectively. This is the first time that a Russian pavilion was honored with the gold award for the whole history of EXPO international exhibitions since 1851.
The award was handed out to Georgy Kalamanov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, the Commissioner General of the Russian pavilion at EXPO-2017. ‘This is deserved recognition. We are glad that the work of our team and our partners’ contribution in the preparation of the Russian pavilion exposition were honored with the top award. I would like to especially thank our main partners including our colleagues from Rosatom who helped to make our Arctic exposition so interesting,’ he said.
Rosatom’s facilities make the basis of the Russian pavilion exposition with the main focus on the Arctic, development of natural resources of North regions of Russia using state of the art technologies. The exposition included ‘Arctic Energy’ water installation demonstrating the Northern Sea Route with the presentation of nuclear icebreaker mockups, design of the new icebreaker ‘Leader’ and Floating NPP.
Steen Christensen, IEB President, and Vincent Gonzales Loscertales, IEB Secretary General, were the members of the jury as official representatives of the International Exhibition Bureau (IEB). The jury also included 4 members of the commission appointed by the organizers and three IEB experts. Headed by Steen Christensen, the jury members visited each pavilion of the participant countries three times. Winners were chosen based on a number of criteria including results achieved for the period from the Exhibition opening and results of the visits to the national expositions.

The design of ‘Leader’ icebreaker demonstrated in the Russian pavilion is a breakthrough in the history of the Russian icebreaker fleet. This is an icebreaker of the future that will make a year round navigation possible in the Arctic independent of weather conditions. It will be capable of meeting four meter ice, and also 2 meter ice at the speed of 10 knots. These performances provide for considerable reduction of cargo transportation time along the Northern Sea Route while even now transportation along this route is twice faster than transportation along the Suez and Panama Canals. The exposition also demonstrated a mockup of ‘Academician Lomonosov’ floating NPP which is the first world mobile small power unit. The floating NPP may be used in remote regions that have no connection to the main system of power distribution. These plants will supply electricity to distant residential areas and industrial facilities.
8 September was the Day of Russia at Astana EXPO-2017. Within the framework of the Day of Russia, on the platform of XI Eurasian Forum KAZENERGY, Rosatom organized the panel session ‘New technologies and solutions in nuclear industry. Practices of Digital Technology Adoption.’
Rosatom held the Nuclear Week devoted to Russian nuclear technologies in the Russian pavilion on 17 – 23 July.
During the Nuclear Week, Rosatom presented a topic exposition under the slogan ‘Atomic energy as the driving force of the future’ demonstrating radiation technologies in agriculture, water desalination and purification, space exploration, closed fuel cycle and thermonuclear power.
As part of the Nuclear Week, Rosatom also held a number of business and educational events with the participation of international experts, including the panel session ‘Carbon free energy as the energy of the future’. The speakers expressed their opinion that atomic energy as well as solar and wind power generation, is a must of a low carbon energy mix.
Rosatom’s exposition was also presented in the pavilion ‘Atomic Energy World’ created by Kazatomprom with the support of Rosatom.
