Kursk, Russia, 10 April 2020 - The concrete walls of the backup control centre for power unit No. 1 have been built at the Kursk NPP-2 construction site. Designed to provide remote control of the reactor, the backup control centre is part of the Kursk NPP-2, which will be equipped with VVER-TOI technology.
“In the event of a theoretical situation where the main unit control centre is not accessible to operational personnel, a backup control centre is used,” explained Aleksey Volnov, the chief engineer at Kursk NPP-2. “From this remote point, tasks are performed to manage safety systems, bring the reactor to and maintain it in a subcritical state, arrange for heat removal from the reactor, and operate the reactor with the help of hardware, instruments, and displays.”
The reserve control point is a separate two-story building, measuring 33 x 18 metres in size and 12.35 metres in height. Under normal operation, the building is part of the free access zone.
The concreting process was preceded by reinforcing the walls with 10.5 tonnes of metal. In the near future the constructors will proceed with building the structure’s ceiling.
