This week a large delegation of 42 permanent representatives of foreign countries to international organizations in Vienna visited Saint-Petersburg to have a look at Russia’s advanced nuclear power technologies.

Ambassadors visited LLC Baltijskiy Zavod – Sudostroenie where they had a tour of the floating nuclear power plant Akademik Lomonosov (designed to supply electricity to the seaport of Pevek and companies based in Chukotka) and a new generation nuclear icebreaker which is being built there. They also visited existing Leningrad NPP and Leningrad Phase II which is under construction (Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad Region) where ROSATOM prepares the first criticality of the world’s second reactor of Generation III+ (VVER-1200) which meets all post-Fukushima safety requirements.

The event was invited by Russia as a leading Member State of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a member of the IAEA Board of Governors. Since 2013 this has been the fifth visit arranged by the permanent mission of Russia to the IAEA and a record visit in terms of participants. The delegation included diplomats and nuclear experts from Austria, Brazil, China, Jordan, Hungary, Panama, Peru, Republic of South Africa, Singapore, Sudan, Switzerland, Thailand and other countries.

“The most important issue on the visit’s agenda is the link between nuclear power and ecology. The plant is situated in one of the cleanest places of Leningrad Region and demonstrates that nuclear power is green. At the plant our guests have received comprehensive answers to all questions related to safety and understand that Russian plants, in fact, are safest in the world,”
Vladimir Voronkov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to International Organizations in Vienna, noted.

Paulina Maria Franceschi Navarro, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Panama to International Organizations in Vienna, said: I would like to thank ROSATOM for this trip and perfect experience we have gained during the tour of Leningrad NPP. We saw how a nuclear power plant is functioning and got to know what investments are made in this sphere. Based on what we have seen I can say that the nuclear power plant demonstrates high level of safety and this is very important. I would like to note one more aspect: the efforts to inform residents, general public and stakeholders. I deem it very important that ROSATOM has selected the strategy that makes its activities clear to the local population, all who live around the nuclear power plant.

Hussam Abdullah Hasan Al Husseini, Permanent Representative of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan International Organizations in Vienna, said: It is my third trip of five organized by ROSATOM for ambassadors in Vienna. I must say that in each of these trips we get great impressions from those new technologies and developments they show us. This time, safety issues were the main topics of the technical tour, and this time, due to the information received, we ascertained that not only nuclear technologies are safe in themselves but the technologies offered specifically by ROSATOM are safe. More and more we make sure that nuclear technologies are valuable and this, in turn, allows us to inform our population having in hand all the figures and information about characteristics of nuclear power units and their safety level, which we received here. We can supply our population not only with information which confirms attractiveness of nuclear power but speak about the fact that involvement in the use of these technologies may bring benefits for environment.

For information:

These visits demonstrate high level of openness of ROSATOM and Russian nuclear industry as a whole. Previously, during four similar visits the permanent representatives made tours of Rostov and Belarus NPPs, Atommash factory (a branch of AEM-technologies which is part of ROSATOM’s machine engineering division Atomenergomash holding), Urals Electrochemical Combine (a company of the Fuel Company of ROSATOM TVEL) and other Russian power facilities and enterprises. They unfailingly noted high level of arrangement of international visits and uniqueness of Russian nuclear technologies.
