On 18 July, 2017, the ceremony of the Nuclear Week opening took place in the Russian Pavilion of Astana EXPO-2017 Trade Show featuring Russian nuclear technologies.

Among the participants of the opening ceremony was Kirill Komarov, First Deputy CEO for Corporate Development and International Business, Georgy Kalamanov, Commissioner General of the Russian section, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, and Rapil Zhoshibayev, Commissioner of EXPO-2017 International Trade Show.

Kirill Komarov welcomed the guests on behalf of Rosatom and noted that the moto of Astana EXPO-2017 International Trade Show is “Energy of the Future.” “A lot of people nowadays ask a question: “What is the energy of the future? We are sure as well as a great number of international experts supporting our view that the perfect energy mix of the future is a combination of green energy sources. Nuclear power plays and will keep playing a great role in this energy mix. Nuclear power today is not power alone. Our exposition shows clearly how nuclear technologies improve life quality including such areas as medicine and agriculture, desalination and water treatment. Nuclear power today is used in space exploration bringing the future closer.”

Georgy Kalamanov, Commissioner-General of the section, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade noted in his welcome speech: “Today we open the Nuclear Week that we will hold under the auspices of Rosatom. This company is implementing 34 projects of unit construction abroad, and also projects in nuclear medicine and new energy sources, which fully fits into the topic of Astana EXPO."

The participants of the opening ceremony visited the Russian pavilion featuring Rosatom’s temporary exposition whose message is “Nuclear Power as a Driving Force of the Future.” The visitors made a virtual excursion to Gen 3+ unit in the section devoted to modern NPP operation. They could see the exposition demonstrating how nuclear technologies improve the quality of life including such areas as agriculture, medicine, desalination and water treatment, and also how the use of nuclear power in space exploration, supercomputers, closed fuel cycle, superconductors and thermonuclear power brings the future closer.


The permanent exposition of Rosatom in the Russian pavilion presents innovation of the Russian icebreaker fleet – “Leader” nuclear icebreaker design. The visitors can see the visual presentation of the icebreaker design on the radial 3D display. This is the icebreaker of the future that makes a year-round navigation possible in the Arctic irrespective of weather conditions. This icebreaker is capable of meeting 4-meter ice layer, and 2-meter ice layer at the speed of 10 knots. These performances ensure considerable reduction of the shipment time by the North Sea.

Besides, visitors of Russia pavilion may see a mockup of a floating nuclear power plant. “Academician Lomonosov”, Russian floating NPP, is the first world mobile unit of small capacity. The floating NPP may be used in remote regions far from the main system of power distribution and supply power to residential areas and industrial facilities. This is a reliable and affordable source that is capable of energy generation under any weather conditions. Completion of the floating NPP is scheduled for 2019. The port of destination for the floating NPP will be Pevek, the northernmost town of Russia.
