On September 6th, 2017 in Vladivostok during the Eastern Economic Forum Alexey Likhachev, General Director of ROSATOM State Corporation and Toshio Kodama, President of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) signed Memorandum for Information Exchange on Reactor Physics Experiments for Minor Actinoid Transmutation for Radioactive Waste Processing and Management (hereinafter the “Memorandum”).

In the signed Memorandum ROSATOM and JAEA share the intention to cooperate in promoting innovation energy technologies in radioactive waste (RW) management, a vital issue in today’s nuclear power industry.

A technology for transmutation of minor actinoid contained in RW, i.e. through burning in fast reactors or accelerator-driven system of long-lived radioactive isotopes of americium, curium, and neptunium recovered upon reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel, allows us to significantly reduce volume and radiotoxicity of waste.

Scientific centers in Russia and Japan, having a long-term successful record of research and experimental work in RW management, are interested in joining their efforts along this direction vital for human and environmental safety.
