Nukem Technologies acts as a general contractor for the construction of intermediate spent fuel storage (ISFS) and SWTSF. Thomas Seipolt, company’s managing director announced another Ignalina NPP decommissioning benchmark: launch of the hot tests and hot operations.
At this stage, low- and intermediate-level radioactive wastes are scheduled to be pulled out from the temporary storages, sorted and then packed for further transfer and treatment.
In April 2017, Ignalina NPP got a license for ISFS (B 1 facility) industrial use. This was a start for another huge Ignalina NPP decommission phase.
«It’s a pilot NPP decommission project of a Russian design. There’re no relevant reprocessing projects that were delivered to a customer in the whole world», - Thomas Seipolt reported - «It will provide Ingnalina NPP with the cutting edge equipment for the long-term nuclear waste treatment».
Ignalina NPP decommissioning, including the construction of SWTSF are being funded by Ignalina International Decommissioning Support Fund under the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Fund’s participants are the European Commission and the governments of Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Great Britain, Norway and Switzerland.
