ROSATOM Director General Alexey Likhachev and Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Economic Relations and Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjarto discussed recent progress on Hungary’s Paks II NPP project in Vienna on 26 September 2022 in the framework of the 66th IAEA General Conference.
The parties noted the importance of the project’s transition to the full construction stage following the issue of corresponding licenses at the end of August 2022; they also discussed additional measures to ensure that construction proceeds according to schedule. The meeting’s participants agreed that the key to the project’s successful implementation would be well-coordinated efforts by both the customer and the general contractor under the supervision of the Hungarian Regulator. The parties agreed to continue working together to achieve their common goal of building and commissioning modern and safe nuclear units at Paks II NPP.
Preparations are currently underway for the start of construction. These include soil strengthening measures, arranging for the construction of an impervious barrier, developing a foundation pit for future power units, and building and installing construction facilities and auxiliary facilities. Equipment suppliers have also begun producing equipment.
The parties also discussed questions pertaining to other collaborations between Hungarian companies and ROSATOM subsidiaries.

For reference:
The Paks II NPP project is being implemented on the basis of an intergovernmental agreement signed by Russia and Hungary on 14 January 2014, as well as three contracts signed on 9 December 2014 on the construction of a new plant. Paks II NPP will be built on a turnkey basis. The guaranteed service lifespan of power units 5 and 6 is 60 years with the possibility of lifetime extension. The project’s general contractor is ROSATOM’s engineering company ASE JSC.
